JOB TITLE: Archdiocesan Assistant Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministry
REPORTS TO: Archdiocesan Director of Faith Formation
FSLA: Full time; Exempt Employee
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The principal function of the Archdiocesan Coordinator for Youth and Young Adult Ministries will be to collaborate with the Archdiocesan Faith Formation Staff and Directors and Coordinators for Parish Youth Ministries, the Archbishop of Las Vegas, and the Pastors of parishes and provide support as they strive to respond to the needs of young people in their local communities. (Youth and Young Adults will be described as Middle School aged teens and pre-teens, High School aged teens, and young adults to about age 35.)
The Archdiocesan Assistant Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministries works under and in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Director of Faith Formation in extending the ministry of the Bishop, with parish Directors and Coordinators for Youth Ministry, to "respond to the needs of young people and to involve young people in sharing their unique gifts with the larger community" (Renewing the Vision, pg 9). To accomplish this task the person in this position must have demonstrated competence in applying the standards of comprehensive youth ministry and the goals of ministry with adolescents as outlined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop's 1997 document Renewing the Vision: a framework for Catholic youth ministry.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Serve as the primary resource and point of contact for all Youth and Young Adult Ministries in the parishes of the Archdiocese.
- Follow and implement all archdiocesan guidelines in work with youth and young adults.
- Develop and maintain a budget for Archdiocesan Youth and Young Adult Ministry.
- Engage local parish youth coordinators and directors in youth ministry consultation.
- Develop opportunities for training in youth ministry with sensitivity to full-time, part-time, and volunteer ministry positions.
- Collaborate with priests and pastors and serve as a resource when requested.
- Serve as an advocate for youth, young adults, and youth ministers at diocesan, extra-diocesan, or related gatherings.
- Work collaboratively with various Archdiocesan offices in mutual efforts of ministry and jointly sponsored projects, including but not limited to: the Office of the Bishop, the Office of Finance, the Office of General Counsel, Social Action Ministry, the Office of Vocations, Hispanic Ministry, etc..
- Work collaboratively with the USCCB, and movements outside the Archdiocese of Las Vegas, particularly in Region XI, that promote and practice the goals as outlined in RNV and empower directors and coordinators of parish youth ministry to do the same.
- Vision, create, develop, facilitate, and evaluate Archdiocesan programs that aim to reach, evangelize, and catechize youth and young adults throughout the diocese being sensitive to the multi-cultural climate of our youth and young adults, such as a Diocesan High School Youth Rally, Middle School Rally, Young Adult events, etc.
- Coordinate visits from extra- Archdiocesan entities/groups/individuals that are invited by the Archbishop and contracted with the Archdiocese to evangelize youth and young adults or train directors and coordinators in youth ministry, such as National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministers (NFCYM), National Evangelization Team (NET) etc.
- Collaborate with Catholic Schools and Campus Ministry at secular schools to reach, evangelize, and catechize youth and young adults and support the ministry staff in their efforts to do so.
- Coordinate and promote Archdiocesan sponsored retreat experiences for youth, young adults, and directors/coordinators of youth ministry. Such as the Annual Archdiocesan Conference and staff development day, National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), World Youth Day (WYD), National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry (NCCYM), etc.
- Collaborate with parishes that have sacramental preparation as part of their comprehensive youth ministry program and support the needs of the parishes as they prepare youth and young adults for reception of the sacraments according to Archdiocesan guidelines.
- Regularly engage in personal development, spiritual growth, theological study, prayer, works of charity, and professional development.
- Other duties as assigned by the Archdiocesan Director of Faith Formation, the Auxiliary Bishop or the Archbishop.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- BA in Theology, Ministry, Administration, or other related field; MA in Theology, Ministry, Religious Education, or other related field preferred.
- Minimum five years of successful experience leading and directing comprehensive Youth Ministry programs and events at ONE parish.
- Excellent PC skills especially in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Social Media Outlets, and general website skills. MAC literate with knowledge of Pro-Presenter preferred.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Demonstrate excellent skills in oral and written communication.
- Strong organizational skills in leadership and time management. Ability to see the large vision and to manage the details in a timely manner. Ability to meet deadlines as directed.
- Knowledge of major Church documents related to youth and young adults, evangelization, and catechesis.
- Personal initiative and ability to draw out the gifts of others.
- Understanding of parish ministries, structures and organizations, especially Youth and Young Adult ministries.
- Pastoral leadership skills including collaborative team-based skills, excellent organizational abilities and conflict management skills.
- Experience working in a multicultural environment.
- Understanding of adult learning models.
- Understanding of group process and facilitation skills.
- Flexibility and ability to lead through change.
- Knowledge of speakers, programs, training opportunities and other resources for catechists and pastoral ministers.
- Ability to successfully complete the background check process including fingerprinting and Safe Environment Training.
- Possesses a valid Nevada driver’s license and ability to travel the State of Nevada to support events, parishes, schools, etc. required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work hours are typically from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, but may require a shift to accommodate occasional evening and weekend availability to support parish events and activities. This position requires driving, sitting, standing for extended periods of time as well as regular attendance in the office as well as other Archdiocesan functions outside of the office. Driving required to support events as needed.
