Position Summary:

Carries out responsibilities and interacts with all individuals in accordance with the mission and values of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia (SOSF).

Is responsible for the overall management of the finances of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, including financial oversight of all entities, long range financial planning and annual budgeting, oversight of investments, and day to day management of the finance function. Works closely with the Corporation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in their ongoing efforts to ensure a stable financial future for the Congregation. Works collaboratively with the Treasurer of the Congregation, the Associate Director of Finance and the Corporation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia on all key financial issues related to the support and maintenance of the sisters of the Congregation.

Essential Functions of the Position:

 Management of Finance Department

  • Plans and integrates functions and services within Finance. Identifies initiatives that can improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Finance area, including purchasing.
  • Oversees the work of the Associate Director of Finance; Manager, Accounting Services and the payroll function, including goal setting, performance management and staff development. 
  • Implements and monitors financial policies and procedures to maintain strong internal controls in the organization.
  • Monitors major expenditures and the financial aspects of contracts.
  • Oversees banking relationships including deposits, wire transfers, line of credit or other loans, online reporting, and review of new services.
  • Works with Associate Director of Finance to ensure that all federal, state, and local tax requirements are met, returns are filed in a timely manner and that any appropriate taxes are paid, for both sisters and the corporation.

Quarterly Financial Statement Preparation and Annual Audit

  • Supervises the preparation of accurate and timely quarterly financial statements for all entities.
  • Supervises the annual independent audit.
  • Supervises the preparation of the Annual Report to the Sisters.

Long Range Sustainability Planning, Five Year Capital Plan and Annual Operating and Capital Budgeting

  • Supervises the annual update of the long-range sustainability plan. Helps to identify and implement strategies to ensure the future financial viability of the Congregation, particularly its ministry.
  • Works with the Associate Director of Finance on the development of the annual operating budget.
  • Supervises the development of the five-year capital plan and annual capital budget in coordination with the Capital Budget Review Committee.
  • Works with the Treasurer of the Congregation and the Associate Director of Finance on the annual House budgets for the sisters.
  • Maintains a cash forecasting system, including periodic reporting. Manages short-term funds to assure safekeeping and adequate cash flow to meet regular obligations.

Management of Investments and Treasury Function

  • Collaborates with the Office of Corporate Social Responsibility to ensure that investment policies and guidelines are in compliance with the mission of the Sisters of St. Francis.
  • Monitors performance as well as need for periodic rebalancing of investments to ensure achievement of investment objectives.
  • Works with investment advisors on all aspects of the investment plan and program.
  • Coordinates insurance for the Congregation for all assets.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Works closely with the Treasurer and the Corporation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia on all key financial activities and strategies.
  • Works closely with the Treasurer, the Director of the Corporation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, the Director of Human Resources and others, depending on circumstances, on integration opportunities within the Congregation.
  • Provides input to Director of Human Resources and Corporation regarding annual renewals for benefits. Member of Retirement Committee.
  • Coordinates the activities of the independent auditors and financial advisors.
  • Coordinates the activities of the Financial Advisory Board and the board of Trustees of the Religious Charitable Trust.
  • Builds effective working relationships throughout the organization. Ensures that the interface between departments and the finance office is value-based, smooth, efficient, and effective.
  • Works with department leaders to increase understanding of how their efforts can help achieve the overall budget and financial goals of the Congregation.

 Meetings

  • Prepare all necessary materials for and attend the meetings of the Corporation. (mostly monthly).
  • Develop agendas, coordinate the development of materials for the Financial Advisory Board and Religious Charitable Trust (each meets two times a year).

 Other Important Functions:

  • Perform other related duties as required or directed.
  • Promotes safety.  Encourages and maintains a safe work environment. Follows safe work procedures in carrying out responsibilities and ensures that the staff does the same.  Ensures that employee incidents in the areas supervised are promptly documented and investigated.  

Qualifications:

  • Can support the mission and values of the Sisters of St. Francis.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business (CPA or MBA preferred). 
  • Ten or more year’s experience as Director or CFO, including non-profit experience.
  • Competency in financial management and planning.
  • Ability to work as both a strategic thinker and a hands-on manager.  (In light of the size of the finance department, this position must not only direct but also do some of the actual work, particularly related to the Long-Range Sustainability Plan and the Annual Operating and Capital Budgets).
  • Mastery of accounting, investment management, insurance, pension and other key financial management areas.
  • Maintains current knowledge of accounting and regulatory issues and practices, inclusive of participating in professional education programs and/or associations.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office products with advanced proficiency in Excel and Word.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Proven effective leadership skills, inclusive of being flexible, creative, team-oriented and process driven. Problem solver.
  • Ability to establish credibility and be decisive yet able to recognize and support the organization’s preferences and priorities.
