The JPIC Director provides primary animation support for The School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province (SSND CP) fulfillment of their commitment to justice, peace, and care for our common home in the SSND spirit of Shalom. It is a position that aligns with and promotes solidarity with those who are oppressed, human dignity and integral ecology. The JPIC Director serves as the U.S. Shalom Contact for the SSND CP Province and participates in the collaborative work of the SSND Shalom North America Coordinating Committee (SNACC) and the SSND Shalom International Network.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A. Within the province the Director:

  • Serves as a resource person for the Provincial Council and Provincial Assembly on matters of social justice
  • Promotes the JPIC agenda of the province with the help of JPIC Coordinators
  • Advocates and fosters advocacy to contribute toward positive systemic change using a variety of means including the periodic issuance of action alerts-often in collaboration with the SSND Atlantic-Midwest Province JPIC Director
  • Animates the work of the province Shalom committees and province Laudato Si’ Amination Team and ensures their collaboration with each other
  • Promotes opportunities to integrate the ACTS of the General Chapter and the Directional Statement with province JPIC concerns
  • Provides educational opportunities and resources to promote awareness and engagement of sisters and associates on priority JPIC matters
  • Provides resources and support to sisters and associates (of all ages and abilities) who wish to engage in province Shalom activities or integrate social justice issues and action into their particular ministries
  • Encourages and supports local Shalom animation efforts (examples: Senior Shalom group in St. Louis and Shalom Catalyst group in Milwaukee)
  • Provides regular reports to the province on the status of efforts taken in support of corporate stance statements. As circumstances dictate, initiate and/or support consideration of new corporate stance(s) in keeping with province policy
  • As circumstances dictate, initiates and/or supports statements and sign-on letters on priority social justice concerns for consideration by the Provincial Council
  • Facilitates the contribution of articles to Connections and other province/community communication vehicles to provide timely information and suggestions for action based on research on current topics
  • Collaborates with and participates in the work of the Corporate Responsibility Committee
  • Develops an annual budget with the Provincial Council and monitors throughout the year

B. Within the broader SSND community the director collaborates with:

  • The SSND Atlantic-Midwest Province JPIC Director and Shalom contacts on JPIC programming, communications, and advocacy amination efforts
  • The CP Shalom Contacts in Guam and Japan
  • The SSND Shalom International Coordinator in support of International Shalom Network priorities and engagements
  • The SSND UN-NGO Office Rep to support awareness and engagement efforts

C. In the public area, the director:

  • Represents the province in collaborative JPIC efforts of religious congregations and The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR)
  • Facilitates province networking with other organizations concerned about social justice and eco-justice
  • Participates in JPIC efforts regionally and nationally (or solicits delegates to do so)

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field
  • Understanding of the Catholic Social Teaching and familiarity with current Church documents on social and environmental justice
  • Awareness of current JPIC issues and continues to educate self accordingly

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and autonomy
  • Understand and embrace the charism and mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame
  • Computer and internet expertise
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel
